I Want to Blank the Night Away was originally meant to have two versions, a radio friendly version with "I Want to Dance the Night Away" in the chorus, and the unfriendly, "I Want to Fuck the Night Away." I decided to opt out of recording the unfriendly version allowing the easily recognizable euphemism to stand in place, while simultaneously allowing it to be somewhat radio friendly. As I composed the lyrics the phrase "Today I felt numb and tonight is no different," found it's way into the lyrics after I thought it to myself one morning. The song morphed from a tongue in cheek dance track about sexual excess to a personal and societal look at the nature of excessive consumption and the numbness that follows with it.
